FOUR DIFFERENT CRUISES DEPENDING ON YOUR TASTES

Jazz Cruises has been arranging these floating festivals for 8 years now. Over the years they have added cruises specializing in different types of jazz.

The original Jazz Cruise is for straight-ahead jazz enthusiasts. Straight ahead jazz is a style of playing that was popular between bebop and the 1960's styles. It features lots of improvisation and individual solos. The Jazz purist would say it is "the way Jazz has always been played". The next sailing of the Jazz Cruise is November 9 - 16, 2008. It will sail for 7 nights from Ft. Lauderdale to the Western Caribbean (Key West, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, and Belize).

Dave Koz and Friends at Sea first sailed in 2005 and has been the epitome of cool and class at sea. The featured music here is Smooth Jazz which is generally described as the genre that utilizes instruments traditionally associated with Jazz and stylistic influences drawn from mostly R&B, but also funk and pop. The music isn't cerebral but it is unobtrusive, slick, and highly polished, where the overall sound matters more than the individual parts. Dave Koz and Friends will sail November 2 - 9, 2008. It will sail round trip from Ft. Lauderdale and include ports of call in the Eastern Caribbean (Turks and Caicos, St. Thomas, St. Barths, Half Moon Cay).

The Smooth Jazz Cruise is hosted by Wayman Tisdale and features smooth Jazz similar to Dave Koz but with some R&B, other music, comedy and fun targeted for adults. It's truly the most fun week-long party at sea. The next Smooth Jazz Cruise sailing is January 18 - 25, 2009. It will also sail from Ft. Lauderdale but the itinerary is not yet finalized.

The inaugural voyage of The Playboy Jazz Cruise will take place January 25 - February 1, 2009. While Playboy was best known for their outstanding articles, the magazine was very influential in promoting Contemporary Jazz which is essentially a catch-all term for the various permutations of popular, mainstream jazz of the 1980's and 90's. It is usually either a variation on classic, small group hard-bop or slick fusion that concentrates on rhythms instead of improvisation. Often Comtemporary Jazz exhibits more rock and pop influences that traditional hard-bop, but it's bop origins are still quite evident. So, the genre finds itself somewhere between smooth and straight ahead. Sailing details are not available (other than the January 25 date) at this time.
