What is Eco-tourism anyway?
The International Eco-tourism Society (TIES) defines it as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people." It includes several travel subgroups like nature, heritage, cultural and soft adventure.
Tourist organizations that subscribe to the eco-tourism model will take their responsibilities seriously and will be sure that they prevent harm from coming to the people, animals and lands they visit. In addition to responsible travel practices from tour companies and visitors, the very dollars earned from tourism offers governments incentive to preserve these resources and attractions.
There are many organizations offering eco-friendly tours. Among the best known are:
- Backroads - specializing in walking, hiking, biking, and water trips (canoe and kayak).
- O. A. R. S. (Outdoor Adventure River Specialists) - as the name implies - rafting and kayaking are specialties.
- Lindblad Expeditions - partners with National Geographic and other organizations to arrange both land and sea learning expeditions all over the world.
- Abercrombie and Kent - provider of luxury tours and a partner with The Nature Conservancy to create eco-friendly adventures guided by conservationists.
- Tauck World Discovery - another luxury tour provider offering a number of tours that fit the eco-friendly mold.
Check the Eco-tourism section under the Great Values tab in the left column to see examples of tours from these and other organizations.
